Carmela is the narrator and main character of the short story, Brændt Orange/Burnt Orange from the Danish flash fiction collection, Det Trækker Op Til Storm/A Storm Is A-brewing, published in 2019 by player. The book in itself was inspired by the ballet, Napoli, by August Bournonville. ___________________
The short story is divided into two tracks, one being presented as a series of letters written by Carmela to a woman named Chiara whom she knows from childhood and the other is a collection of glimpses from Carmela's life in Naples. The letter track has been translated to English by player and can be found in this journal. The story has later been translated in its entirety and can be found here.
Throughout the story, Carmela struggles with worries on behalf of her seven year old daughter, Chiarina, named after the woman to whom she's writing, her feeling of foreignness and estrangement from Naples, her homesickness after her childhood town, Asolo and the girl she knew there, just as much as she tries to hold on to a sense of hope and joy by anchoring herself in her relationships to her daughter's father, Luigi, and her new boyfriend, Doriano. In the end, however, she decides to leave Naples with Chiarina to find her way back to her lost past and to avoid the mythical creatures of the sea stealing them away.
Default canon point: Can take Carmela both post-story, after she's left Naples or from any point during the short story. Will most often default to the latter, but if there's something specific you'd like to explore, let me know and I can find a canon point that fits.
